Spheroidal Cast Iron Foundry

The foundry processes have enabled the production of spheroidal cast iron, with a product of superior quality compared to flake cast iron and with excellent mechanical properties.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron is an iron-carbon alloy in which free carbon is present in the form of spherical graphite. This particularity allows spheroidal cast iron to be ductile and easily machinable. The production of spheroidal cast iron in the foundry follows specific thermal and chemical treatments that allow its weight, hardness, and mechanical properties to be tailored.

Fonderia Quaglia e Colombo produces castings in spheroidal graphite cast iron used in the mechanical and industrial sectors, with ISO 9001:2008 quality certification.

Production of spheroidal cast iron castings

The production of spheroidal cast iron has become the standard in modern foundries, thanks to its mechanical properties and ease of machining, which allow its use in various industrial and civil applications.

The spheroidal cast iron melting process allows for high-quality production with continuous casting.

Mechanical properties of spheroidal cast iron:

  • Light and strong
  • Ductile and easily machinable
  • Resistant to oxidation

Thanks to these properties, spheroidal cast iron has become widely used, becoming a valid alternative to the use of steel.

Types of spheroidal cast iron

Based on the matrix used in the foundry for its production, spheroidal cast iron can be divided into three types:

  • Ferritic: Spheroidal cast iron composed of graphite spheres in an iron matrix. Its main characteristics are ductility, ease of machining, and high magnetic permeability.
  • Pearlitic: Spheroidal cast iron with a pearlite matrix. Its characteristics include greater hardness and tensile strength (less ductile and machinable than ferritic cast iron).
  • Ferritic-pearlitic: Spheroidal cast iron obtained with a mixed ferrite and pearlite matrix. It combines the characteristics of both ferritic and pearlitic cast iron, remaining easily machinable and resistant at the same time.

Fonderia Quaglia e Colombo offers customised projects in spheroidal cast iron, allowing the choice from a wide range of combinations for yield strength-extension.
